Coaching Questions of the Month: Do You Plan to Finish Your Life Well?

The idea of finishing well has been a guiding force in my life for about 30 years. I was first asked the question by my mentor over breakfast during one of our monthly meetings. At first, I really didn’t know what he was talking about. I was more interested in getting his thoughts about my new business cards (which were my first business cards.)

Finishing well? I was just getting started. But over time, I began to embrace the power of this question and found the courage to start working on my answer.

Almost every single client I coach has to at some point be asked the question, “how do you plan to finish your life well?” They usually have the same reaction I did when I first heard the question.

There are several reasons why this question takes courage to answer.

First, it forces us to be freshly aware that life as we know it will come to an end. It is the one thing we all have in common. We are all temporary here on earth and we all have an expiration date. Not the funnest thing to think about all the time but as you may have heard, until you come to terms with the reality of your death you will never be free to really live. It’s true!

The second reason this question will test you is because you and you alone are responsible for how you will finish your life. No one else can do this work for you. Its your life and therefore you must embrace the challenge of stewarding your resources, talents, and opportunities so that you can finish well.

The final reason you have to find courage to answer the question of finishing well is because it requires you do some planning. So many leaders are too focused on finishing the day that they struggle to stop and think about their lives long term. Finishing well has a built in idea of life without regrets because you had the discipline to focus your life and organize it around your purpose and calling.

Here are some questions you should consider using for personal development:

  • Do you plan to finish your life well?
  • What does finishing well look like to you?
  • How did you come up with your answer to the last question?
  • What has to change this year that will help you move towards finishing well?
