Do All People Have Ambition?
Do all business people have ambition or just some?
Have you ever wondered that – even about yourself some days?
What would it be like if you and I could take a daily a
mbition vitamin each morning that would give us all the drive we needed to face any obstacles that came our way?
What is ambition anyway?
Ambition can be defined as an inward desire to achieve, excel, work towards a preferred future.
Other words to describe this drive are aspiration, craving, desire, drive, eagerness, earnestness, energy, enterprise, enthusiasm, fire in belly, get up and go, hunger, initiative, itch, longing, moxie*, passion, push, spirit, striving, thirst, vigor, yearning, zeal.
So here are some questions for you:
Would you call yourself an ambitious person? Why or why not?
Are there days when you have more ambition than other days? Explain.
Do you think it is possible to get more ambition when you don’t seem to have any?
The question that researchers still debate is: Are people born with ambition or is this something that they develop over time? I certainly don’t have the answer to that one, but what I DO know is that to be successful as a business owner you have to be ambitious at some level.
If you knew you could grow your level of ambition, would you be interested? Believe it or not you can.
The key is to find the “spark” that ignites the ambition. You have probably experienced this, or seen it in others when they struggled with motivation and consistency… and then the “spark” ignited their ambition and change happened.
How much time do you spend thinking about the “spark” that fires you up?
Here are two starter exercises for you.
First things first, do you know what it is tha
t fires you up, gets you motivated, ignites the passion in you? If not, you need to spend some time thinking about what gets you excited about building a business.
(Right now! Stop and write down some possible answers and clues. List the “obvious” ones, of course: Money, Positive Attention, etc… But dig a bit deeper, and think about what has sparked you in the past.)
Second, think about it on a daily basis. Just like you feed your body 3 times a day, you should feed your ambition 3 times a day by thinking
about what a preferred future would look like, and intentionally feeding the “sparks” you listed above.
